Why Is Khem Speedrunning His Own Funeral in Khemjira The Series Episode 1?
Can we talk about Khem’s survival instincts for a second? Or rather, the total lack thereof?
You know you are a walking, breathing magnet for malevolent spirits. You know your life has a literal countdown timer attached to it. And yet, your immediate reaction to nighttime in Kanchanaburi is to take a casual stroll through pitch-black, dark alleyways like you’re on a cute little evening stroll.
Please.
Welcome to the Khemjira The Series Episode 1 commentary. I’m not here to just blindly simp over the cinematic lighting or pretend everything in this premiere made perfect narrative sense. We need to talk about the cold, hard reality: Khem gets chased, choked, and nearly murdered by a ghost in the first ten minutes, and his overall reaction to his own mortality is a casual shrug.
Let’s unpack this madness, because the logic in this premiere is hanging on by a microscopic thread.

The 6-Year-Old Calling the Shots
We have to talk about this flashback because the math and the family dynamics here make absolutely zero sense.
It’s 2025 in the show’s timeline, which means 20-year-old Khem was born around 2004 or 2005. That puts the Chandrapisut family trip to Ubon Ratchathani somewhere around 2010. Baby Khem was about five or six years old when his mother brought him to Grandmaster Sek.
Now, look at the kid on screen. Aside from the fact that he doesn’t act like any five-year-old I’ve ever met, where are the actual adults in this scenario?
Grandmaster Sek is ready to seal Khem’s sight so malevolent spirits stop trying to murder him. It’s a sensible plan. But six-year-old Khem speaks up and goes, “No thanks, I’d rather keep seeing ghosts so I can talk to Mommy after she dies.”
And everyone just... goes along with it?!
His mother folds immediately. His father doesn’t object. Grandmaster Sek—an experienced shaman— shrugs and hands a kindergartener a protective amulet and a short incantation like it’s a parting gift at a birthday party.
Why is a six-year-old dictating his own fatal karma? Where is the parental intervention? They handed a child the keys to his own early grave and said, “Good luck out there, kiddo!” The exact same kid who was nearly eaten by a spirit five minutes earlier.

Saving Everyone Except Himself
Fast-forward to the present day. Khem is officially running on borrowed time with six months left on his birth chart. Does he change his routine? Does he avoid high-risk situations? Absolutely not. He is too busy playing the neighborhood hero.
Look, saving a little boy locked up in an apartment by his deadbeat dad is noble. Calling the police and helping the boy’s ghost mother rest in peace is a sweet moment. But Khem, your own corpse is scheduled to hit the pavement in half a year! Where is the urgency?
This show is titled Khemjira Must Survive, but right now it feels less like a survival story and more like Let’s Help Khem Die Sooner Rather Than Later.
And then we have Jet. Oh, Jet. What, exactly, is your contribution to your best friend’s survival strategy?
When Khem’s hallucinations peak—like when his drawing distorts in the art room, causing him to fall off his stool and shatter his amulet—Jet’s big move is taking him home so they can share a bed. That’s it.
That night, Khem has a dream where his mother’s voice calls out to him, leading him toward a lake while a mysterious man tries to hold him back. In the real world, that dream translates to him trying to jump off the balcony at Jet’s house. And how does Jet save him? Not through any vigilance of his own, but because Khem’s real mom has to call out to Jet from beyond the grave to wake him up just in time to stop Khem from taking a fatal dive.
I mean, Jinn from Head2Head at least jammed a chair under the door handle to keep J locked in and safe from wandering off! On Jet’s watch, Khem almost takes a dive off the balcony while Jet slumbers peacefully, relying on a dead relative to act as his personal alarm clock. Even Jet’s sister Jane looked at the situation and knew something was completely off.

Por Kru Pharan Deserves a Massive Pay Raise
Enter Master Pharan: a man who woke up today, took one look at Jet and Khem, and instantly regretted every decision that led him to this career path.
Jet had precisely one job on the bus trip to Ubon Ratchathani: avoid the haunted tunnel. Pharan explicitly warned him about it. But when the bus driver takes the shortcut straight through it, Jet completely misses it because he’s too busy hanging out and having fun with his friends on the trip.
When the bus gets trapped inside a horde of angry spirits, Pharan has to physically astral project across town just to bail them out. So much for “not interfering with other people’s karma.”
When they finally arrive in Ubon Ratchathani, we get our first real look at Pharan in the flesh—top buttons undone, shades on, doing an active exorcism in the middle of the village. The man is exuding pure exhaustion and visual authority.
Jet immediately asks Khem to do aegyo in front of Pharan to beg for help. Please, let the poor shaman breathe! He is already cleaning up the mess caused by Jet’s incompetence.
And when they reach Pharan’s house, Pharan snaps at the entrance: “You are not welcome here.”
Khem and Jet get all defensive and hurt, thinking he’s talking to them. Guys, step off your high horses for two seconds. He isn’t talking to you. He’s looking right past you at the hottie ghost and his sycophants standing right behind Khem! And isn’t that just the most perfect foreshadowing of what Pharan will be doing for Khem from here on out? All the hassle, for better or for worse, until death do them part.

Continue the Unraveling
As frustrating as Khem’s total lack of self-preservation can be, this premiere set up the stakes, atmosphere, and spiritual lore exceptionally well. The tunnel sequence was an absolute masterclass in dread, even if Jet’s logic getting them there was paper-thin.
Now I want to hear from you guys in the comments:
- Is Khem’s complete lack of self-preservation endearing, or are you already screaming at your screen for him to lock his doors?
- On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is Por Kru Pharan’s blood pressure right now?
