Source Material & Novel Background

The novel Love Upon a Time (Original Thai Title: ภพเธอ) by Littlebbear96 follows Nakhun, a twenty-year-old university student who is skeptical of superstitions until a lunar eclipse transports him four hundred years back to the Ayutthaya era. Awakening in the body of ‘Klao,’ the missing son of a disgraced nobleman, Nakhun is forced to navigate a world of rigid social hierarchies while searching for a way back to the present. His path crosses with Muen Phop, a disciplined police official and the real Klao’s childhood friend, who initially suspects Nakhun is an impostor. As Nakhun solves the mystery of the original Klao’s disappearance, he and Phop develop a deep, forbidden bond that transcends time, eventually leading to Nakhun’s return to the present day where he reunites with Phop’s modern reincarnation.

Central Theme & Tone

The book explores profound themes of destiny and reincarnation, centering on the belief that soulmates are tethered across lifetimes regardless of time or space. It delves into the internal conflict of identity, as Nakhun struggles with whether Phop loves him or the ghost of the original Klao. The tone is atmospheric and poignant, blending the high-stakes tension of a historical mystery with a slow-burn, emotional romance. By contrasting Nakhun’s modern, pragmatic worldview with the spiritual and traditional values of the Ayutthaya period, the narrative creates a sense of yearning and timelessness, emphasizing that true love is a constant even when the world changes.

Drama Adaptation

The novel has been adapted into a highly anticipated Thai BL series titled Love Upon a Time, produced by Mandee Work (DomundiTV). The series stars Net Siraphop as Phop and JJ Radchapon as Nakhun/Klao. Notably, the production faced significant changes when the original lead actor, James Supamongkon, withdrew from the project to pursue a music career, leading to JJ Ratchapon stepping into the role of Nakhun. Directed with a focus on historical accuracy and grand scale, the drama’s release was initially postponed due to natural disasters in filming locations but has recently completed production. Fans are particularly excited for the series’ translation of the novel’s lush, period-specific visuals and the central chemistry between the leads.
